Nehemiah Chapter 2

Introduction:

Here we find Nehemiah in chapter 2 very sad over the news he has received. It was the custom of that time not to go before the King sad, as it was disrespectful to his reign as King. Yet Nehemiah knew this but could not pretend, or put on a mask of his emotions. Even though it could mean death, instead he prayed. We see here in (Verses 1-9), the provision and favor of the Lord granted to Nehemiah. Nehemiah was given all that he needed for the trip, including protection, and letters to the surrounding political leaders to provide for him on his journey.

Nehemiah 2:1-9 (Going deeper)

  1. Prayer: We see that Nehemiah prayed and talked to God with every move he made. This is a great lesson. If we are going to lead others it must be done through much prayer, and I would also add prayer and fasting. We must remember the we are all under shepherds, in whatever capacity we serve God is head.

  2. Relationship: Nehemiah had must have had a good relationship with the king for the king to do all he did for him. We must remember that God is love. We are to love and respect others, and all we do we are to do as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:22-23).

  3. Provision: All provision’s were made for the trip Nehemiah had to take in abundance. Nehemiah was given everything he asked for and more. We must trust God. He is our Provider and He will provide for our needs just as His word says. The key here is the prayers of Nehemiah he asked God first, He looked for God’s guidance in everyday matters, He believed and trusted God. We can make things difficult at times; sometimes all that is needed is relying on the foundation in which we were taught-trust and believe.

  4. Protection: Nehemiah was given guards to assist him to make sure he was protected on his journey. Just as the Lord protects us. In ministry and suffering the Lord we will face persecution, suffering, and at times hardship. No matter what we face or what the enemy tries to do, we are protected. Knowing the word of God is important, in times of trouble we can always draw from the word we have learned. The Lord is our Strong Tower, Jesus is a Rock, and the fire of the Holy Spirit is within us-we are well protected.

Nehemiah 2:10-20

  1. Enemies: We see here in verse 10 that there were people who were not happy with Nehemiah’s journey and mission to rebuild the wall. As you follow the will of the Lord there will be those who are not happy. Sometimes those that come up against us will be in our own families. But we must remember who the turn enemy is the devil. The enemy will use whoever he can to upset you or hinder you or discourage you from doing the will of God. As leader we can not take things personally, but remain objective. Don't get mad with people love the “hell”right out of them.

  2. Keep Silent: Verse 11, we see when Nehemiah came to town, he did not tell anyone why he was there. Or what the Lord had put on his heart to do, he surveyed the damage to walls at night. He took a few men with him only. He was able to see that the wall was badly damaged by fire. Nehemiah was very wise in keeping silent, the word of God tells us there is a time to talk and a time to be silent (Ecclesiastes 3:7). We can not always tell everyone what God is doing in our lives, or what we are believing God for. In leadership we must seek wisdom at all times.

  3. Encouragement: When the time was right (verses 13-20) Nehemiah told the people his plans, he was able to encourage them. He told his testimony, He got the people on one accord, and they were ready to work. If we are going to lead others, we need to know how to inspire and encourage others.

Prayer:

Lord we pray that you would help us to be more like you. As we led your people give us a understanding heart and a spirit of wisdom. Let us remain humble and every before your face seeking your righteous way and your will for your people, we know that you are working all things out for your glory and our good.
